The Calm Matters theme
The plugin works with any theme. Calm Matters is made to go with it: a warm paper page, soft platinum sidebars and a friendly serif for titles. Dusk is its dark mode: deep violet surfaces with lighter pastels, never grey. It changes how things look, not what they do.
What it adds
- Across your vault: Figtree for the interface and notes, Young Serif for titles and headings, JetBrains Mono for code; pastel top-level folders, tags, highlights and callouts; frosted, rounded menus, modals and command palette.
- On the plugin’s screens: serif titles, pinstriped headers and lane headers, a calm gradient behind Matter overviews, and a frosted quick add.
Install the theme
From the plugin: select Get the Calm Matters theme on setup’s last step, or Get the theme at the top of the plugin’s settings. Obsidian’s theme browser opens at Calm Matters; select Install and use. When the theme is in use, both places say so instead.
From Obsidian’s settings:
- Open Settings → Appearance and select Manage next to Themes.
- Search for Calm Matters, then select Install and use.
- Switch between Light and Dusk with Obsidian’s own setting, under Appearance → Base color scheme.
You can also start from the theme’s page in the community directory. Its source is on GitHub.
Options
With the Style Settings plugin installed, the theme offers, under Calm Matters:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Accent colour | The pastel used for selection, links and buttons: sky, lavender, mint, bubblegum, peach or butter |
| Plain folder names | Turns off the pastel colour on top-level folders |
| Sans-serif headings | Uses Figtree instead of Young Serif for titles and headings |
| Hide welcome message | Shows Obsidian’s own text on empty tabs |
| Plain empty tabs | Removes the pastel gradient behind empty tabs |
Obsidian’s own accent colour setting takes precedence over the theme’s.
Fonts
The theme embeds Figtree, Young Serif and JetBrains Mono, all under the SIL Open Font Licence, so it needs no internet connection.
