Types and statuses

Every Action has a type, which gives it its colour, and a status, which gives it its column.

Action types

Six types come with the plugin. Each has one pastel, used everywhere the Action appears.

Type ID Icon Colour
Call call phone Mint
Message message message-circle Sky
Write write pencil-line Butter
Meet meet users Lavender
Buy buy shopping-bag Peach
Visit visit map-pin Bubblegum

Colour on a card always means its type. Status never tints a card.

NoteMake them yours

Rename, recolour or add types in Settings → Matters that Matter → Action types. Colours always come from the six pastels plus ink. One type is the default: new Actions get it when you don’t choose one.

Statuses

Statuses are the columns of the board, in the order you set. The default workflow has five:

Status ID Category
Later later open
Next next open
Doing doing active
Waiting waiting active
Done done closed
  • Categories say what a status means: open (not started), active (in hand) or closed (finished). An Action is done when its status is in a closed category: it is struck through and never overdue.
  • The backlog status is where new Actions start (Later by default). It is never closed.
  • The done status is what Mark as done sets (Done by default). Reopen moves an Action back to the backlog.

Setup offers presets: the default above; Simple (Later, Doing, Done); and Get stuff done, which keeps Someday apart from Next and uses contexts (Calls, Computer, Errands, Home, Agendas, Anywhere) as types.

What notes store

Notes store the ID of a type or status, never its label. Renaming or recolouring changes nothing in your notes. When you delete a status or type, the plugin asks where its Actions should go and moves them first.

WarningUnknown values

If an Action names a status, type or Matter that doesn’t exist, it is shown in the backlog, with the default type or in the Inbox, with a badge that names the value. Nothing is rewritten until you choose: Dismiss on the badge, or the command Fix orphaned Actions.
