Matters

A Matter is an open line of work that needs attention now and then. Less formal than a project, and it doesn’t have to end.

A Matter is anything worth keeping an eye on: a kitchen renovation, the household bills, a thesis, your health. It has a name, an icon, an outcome if you want one, and a rhythm for looking at it again. It is deliberately not a project: there are no phases or deadlines to manage, only the next steps.

Each Matter is one note (with mtm-kind: matter) and one lane on the board. Its Actions are the cards in that lane.

State

State Meaning
Active You’re working on it. Its lane is open.
Dormant Parked for now. Its lane starts collapsed; its Actions stay in it.
Closed Finished, or no longer yours to keep. Its lane starts collapsed.

Matters are never deleted from the plugin: close them instead. If you delete a Matter’s note yourself, its Actions show in the Inbox with a badge until you move them.

Outcome

One line that says what done looks like (“A working kitchen before the winter holidays.”) or, for a Matter that never ends, the standard you want to keep (“Bills paid on time, papers filed.”). Edit it in the Matter’s overview.

No next Action

An active Matter with nothing outside its backlog status gets a quiet hint, “No next Action”, and a dashed card asking “What’s the next step?” in its first column after the backlog. Waiting on someone counts as moving: those Matters are not flagged.

The overview

Opening a Matter’s note shows its overview: the icon (select it to choose another), the outcome, the state, the review rhythm and your last review note, counts, its Actions by status, the people involved and the notes that link to it. Show on board opens the board at its lane. Review now takes you through a review of this Matter alone. Open note shows the note itself. To always open Matters as notes, turn off Open Matters as their overview in settings.
